Parrot Playgyms & Bird Toys

FunTime Birdy Playgym History
|
After many years of buying different playgyms, playstands and trees for our Umbrella
Cockatoo Marshmellow before we started FunTime Birdy, we noticed the following:
When we purchased a Tree/Totem Pole Parrot Playgym for Marshmellow she always climbed
to the top perch and spent little or no time on the tree limbs below her. With this being the
case, we noticed once she climbed to the top perch, she did not want to come down and it
was an all out war to get her down. To make matters worse, I am short (5'2") and she started
to attack me. Why you might ask? We learned after the fact of course and many bites later,
the bird tallest in the tree is the leader. Marshmellow now being the tallest person in the room
was ruling the roost. We immediately cut down the perch to a height that Marshmellow was
below each person in the room. Right away her behavior changed. At the lower level, she
was just another member of the flock.
Though her biting stopped, Marshmellow had another dilemma. With a lot of Tree Stands and
Play Stands, bird toys can only be hung below the bird at their feet. What an uncomfortable
place for anyone or even a bird to play?
Can you imagine reading a book while standing and the book was on the floor? If
you didn't have great eyesight you would have to bend down at the waist to read it.
WOW, now that's a back ache. The same thing happens when you hang parrot toys
directly below a bird. It is fun for about two seconds before the parrot toy is too
heavy to hold and they let go of the toy. Now that the fun is gone for the bird, the
screaming begins. Your bird is now bored out of his/her mind. If he/she is not
screaming, then the real bad habit starts to take form. Feather Plucking!
To make matters worse, remember those toys that sat below your bird, take a look at all the
poop on them. No bird wants to play with a pooped on toy, so the owner has to constantly
clean the toys.
With all the reasons above, that is why we designed our playgyms the way we do. Partially
because we love our birds and we want them to be happy and healthy birds but also because
we felt there was a definite need for a properly designed Playgym for Parrots. We couldn't be
the only bird owner with these problems. We went through many different designs at first,
finally we found that our current design with the toys at eye level in front of the bird, would keep
the bird occupied because the toys were accessible. Not only was the bird happy but you
had a happy owner too. The bird was happy and content and bird owner did not have to clean
up the toys from the poop. It is a win win situation.
