There are two different African Grey species. The Congo African Grey and the
Timneh African Grey. Both species are very distinguishable in their grey color
but the Congo African Grey has bold red tail feathers while the Timneh African
Grey’s tail feathers are mainly grey. Also, the Timneh is a little smaller in length
than the Congo.
The Congo African Grey’s is native to Western Kenya, Northern Tanzania,
Central Africa all the way to the Gulf of Guinea Islands. The Timneh’s main
homeland ranges from Liberia, Sierra Leone, Southern Guinea and to
the West Ivory Coast.
Both Grey species are known for their great talking capacity. They are the true
mimics of the parrot world and love to mimic sounds as well as the people they
love or who they are in close contact to. Congos can be so exact in their mimics
that you can actually tell who trained them, whether it was a male or female.
African Greys are very aware of their surroundings, thus making them a very
intelligent pet. With this being the case, they need a steady diet of interaction
from their human family or they will get bored. Also, Greys will need stimulation
from other areas such as fun and stimulating bird toys in their cage and play
areas.
Our Grey “Jerry” was an adoption from families that could no longer take care of
him because he was a plucker. When we first got “Jerry”, he was very anxious
and worrisome acting. He had no tail feathers and was pretty much featherless.
Over the next several months he occasionally jangled his bell bird toy or tugged
on some plastic keys. So he didn’t play with his bird toys very often. We
decided to hang some newspaper strips from his cage bars and this started the
ball rolling. The more paper we put in around his cage, the more he was
occupied and not bored or anxious anymore. His feathers started to slowly
grow back in. We then put some soft chewable wood on his bird toys and
“Jerry” hasn’t stopped chewing since. The newspaper seemed to be a catalyst
to get “Jerry” to start playing instead of worrying about his feathers.
Since all the bird toys at FunTime Birdy are bird tested and bird approved
before they hit our website for sale, “Jerry” has fully endorsed the FunTime Birdy
Junior Spider bird toy as one of his favorites. The Junior Spider bird toy has a
lot fun wood shapes to munch on as well as plastic sea creatures, plastic
letters/numbers, jelly tube beads and leather strips. Check out all our other
parrot toys at www.funtimebirdy.com.
