African low-cost carrier Fastjet has unveiled its logo and livery, featuring the African Grey Parrot.

The airline’s CEO Ed Winters said the bird had been chosen as it is “renowned for its intelligence and is therefore a perfect personification of Fastjet’s motto: smart travel”.

“We hope that our friendly new mascot and logo will soon become universally recognised as symbols of reliability, efficiency and safety,” said Winters.

Fastjet is preparing to launch a new website and start selling tickets next week, when more information on routes and fare schedules will also become available.

Specific routes have not yet been confirmed, but it is understood the carrier will operate from bases in Kenya, Tanzania, Angola and Ghana.

Fastjet now has three Airbus A319 aircraft in its fleet, which are currently being painted with the new livery before being flown to Tanzania for the launch.

The carrier says that tickets will be available from $20 one-way excluding taxes and charges, and is promising mobile phone technology which will allow customers to buy tickets with purchases being debited from their phone accounts.

Fastjet is being backed by Easyjet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou. The entrepreneur has taken a five per cent share in UK-based investment firm Rubicon, which in turn has purchased the Lonrho aviation business, which has previously flown in Africa under the Fly540 branding.
