What Kind of Parrot is Best for Me?

African Grey Parrot

If you decided to become a parrot owner, the most important step is to determine what type of parrot is best for you and your family.

With nearly 350 different parrot species, you have plenty to choose from. You should research various breeds, personalities and character traits in order to determine which species will fit best into your lifestyle.

Here are a few things to consider:

1.    Size. Larger parrots are generally more demanding. They require more time, attention and care. They are also more expensive to maintain. You will need to purchase larger bird stands and more parrot toys to keep these birds happy.

2.    Noise Factor. All parrots make noise. However, some are noisier than others. Certain breeds will sit on their playgym quietly whistling or chirping to themselves. Others may scream or vocalize loudly while playing with their parrot toys.  Larger breeds such as the Umbrella Cockatoo tend to be much louder than finches or parakeets. If you are the type of person who needs peace and quiet, choose a less vocal parrot.

3.    Your Living Situation. Since parrots tend to be noisy, especially when they are excited or agitated you will need to consider your neighbors. If you live in an apartment or duplex, your neighbors may not appreciate listening to your bird.

4.    Cost. Regardless of the type of parrot you purchase, you will need to invest in supplies. However, certain breeds are more expensive to care for than others. If you purchase a large parrot, such as an African Grey, you will need to invest in bird toys that will keep them occupied.  Larger birds are more destructive, which means they will shred their parrot toys faster than smaller birds. As a result, you will need to buy new bird toys more frequently.

5.    Your Family. Are you looking for a parrot that will be a good pet for your kids? If so, consider the smaller, more docile breeds such as Finches, Parakeets and Cockatiels. Your children will love playing with these parrots. They will also enjoy picking out special bird toys or other bird supplies for their feathered friend.  However, if you are a single person who wants a parrot that is loyal only to you, an African Grey may be ideal.

Purchasing a parrot can be an extremely rewarding experience. Just be sure to do your research in advance so you can choose the best parrot for you and your family.
